What's new in 1.21

Version 1.21 fixes bugs, including a bug related to the new Tournament game mode:

  • player no longer changes to a white square in the middle of tournaments
  • other assorted bugs fixed

Recent updates have included:

  • new Tournament game mode; compete against a unique cast of characters for the tournament win
  • umpire announces the score after each point
  • processor usage while idle is now ~0%, which also results in smoother gameplay
  • many bug fixes

Compared to previous, free beta versions of KTA Tennis, a huge number of new features have been added:

  • totally new animated characters
  • new court graphics
  • much smarter and more difficult "Intermediate" and "Professional" difficulty levels
  • 2-player mode, so two humans can go compete with each other at the same computer
  • lifetime statistic tracking - find out how you're doing over the entire course of your tennis career with points per game, number of wins, losses, and more

KTA Tennis is shareware, and costs $18.00 to purchase.

How to play

Use the controls as indicated on the main screen:

Arrow keys move the player up/down/left/right
Space bar hits the ball
"c" key hits a lob shot (higher, in the air more)

You can also change your controls to mouse hitting, which is a unique control scheme that is only available in KTA Tennis. Click and hold the mouse and drag backwards to start your swing, then drag forward quickly to hit the ball once it's close to your player. Moving the player is accomplished by the same keys on the keyboard.

Game Modes - 1 Player & 2 Player

1 Player has you playing against a computer player, with variable difficulty. "Easy" and "Angry" difficulty levels are fairly gentle, while "Intermediate" and "Professional" are a lot more fun once you get used to the controls of the game.

2 Player can let you and a friend play tennis at the same computer. Set up the controls so you each have some of the keyboard and then start playing.

Tournament

The tournament mode allows you to play against computer opponents of varying skill levels in an effort to win tournaments sponsored by different groups. KTA Tennis keeps track of how many tournaments you've entered and how many you've won. Keep trying, there are many different sponsored tournaments. If you'd like your organization to sponsor one in future versions of the game, contact us for more information.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: There are no graphics! There's no player / no sound / no images. What do I do?
A: This should no longer happen for Mac OS X users. For Windows players, make sure the KTA Tennis application stays in the "KTA Tennis" folder it was originally in.
If that doesn't help, trash the preferences of the program. They are located in:
Mac OS X: ~/Library/Preferences/KTA Tennis (inside your home directory)
Mac OS 7-9: Macintosh HD: System Folder: Preferences: KTA Tennis
Windows: inside the "tennis" folder. Probably re-downloading the program would be the easiest thing to do.

Q: The program is running slow during gameplay. How do I get it to run smoother?
A: Quit other programs to make gameplay go smoothly. Quit all programs other than KTA Tennis if necessary. Game performance will continue to be worked on in the future.

Q: The program seems to open up and then immediately close in Mac OS X - the tennis ball icon shows up in the Dock, but then immediately disappears. How do I fix it?
A: Make sure you have the newest version of Stuffit Deluxe - version 8.0 had a problem that caused exactly this problem. Download an appropriate update from Aladdin Systems.

More frequently asked questions will be included here in future versions of KTA Tennis as necessary.
