Position

Between Layers

When you have the bottom-left pane visible, you will see the exact location of the layer you've currently selected. Sometimes this isn't enough: you might want to know the distance between two layers, or you might want to see the location of various layers, their position in the document and in the group.

Using Position

When you hold down the 'p' key, it will show the exact location of the layer that is currently selected. You can move the mouse around to show its position relative to the document or the enclosing group.

You can even show the distance between one layer and another. When you've selected one layer, hold down the 'p' key and move your mouse over another layer. See the image below for an example.

Moving and resizing of a layer just works while 'p' is down, so this is certainly a feature one should not forget.

When you hold down 'p' while no layer is selected, it will show the position of the layer the mouse is currently hovering over or else show the size of group (or the document) that is currently being edited.

You need to press ⌥+⌘+p in all of the following situations:

  1. Position to Document: When a layer is selected: make sure that the mouse is above an empty part of the document and is not inside another edited group.
  2. Position to Group: When a layer is selected: make sure that the mouse is above an empty part of the document and that the mouse is in the same group your layer is in. When no layer is selected: move you mouse above a layer.
  3. Distance to another layer: Make sure one layer is selected and move your mouse above another layer.
  4. Size of the selected layer: Select a layer and hold your mouse above it.
  5. Size of the group/document: Make sure no layer is selected and that the mouse isn't above any layer.
